National Walk to School Day
DATE: October 4, 2017
INCIDENT: National Walk to School Day
LOCATION: City of Victorville
SUMMARY:
On October 4, 2017, Deputy Alejandro Ramos and Deputy Jeff Dean, from the Victorville Police Department’s Traffic Division, participated in National Walk to School Day. Ramos and Dean donned their reflective safety vests and welcomed students of Galileo Academy, as they made their way to school. They shared the importance of safe routes, walking with a parent or group, being aware of their surroundings and always crossing streets safely.
In the United States, approximately 100 children are fatally injured while walking to or from school each year and another 25,000 sustain less serious injuries. It is the responsibility of everyone to make sure children get to school safely, from parents educating their children to drivers on the street obeying all traffic laws, paying special attention and care in school zones.
This community safety event, as well as many others throughout the year, are made possible by grants awarded by the California Office of Traffic Safety (OTS). The funds awarded by the OTS allow deputies to carry out concentrated enforcement on traffic violations and educate the public about traffic safety, reducing the number of traffic related incidents in our community.
