California Great ShakeOut Drill and City-Wide Disaster Drill Tomorrow, Thursday, October 19th!

CITY OF CULVER CITY TO HOLD
13th ANNUAL COMMUNITY-WIDE DISASTER DRILL!

Scheduled for October 19th at 7:00 pm, the Culver City Fire Department and the City’s Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) and Amateur Radio Emergency Services Team (CCARES) are excited and ready for its 13th Annual Community-Wide Disaster Drill!

CERT and CCARES is comprised of Culver City resident volunteers whom are trained by experienced peers and our Fire Department in Disaster Preparedness, Fire Safety and Utility Controls, Disaster Medical Operations, Light Search and Rescue Operations and Disaster Psychology.

In the event of a regional disaster/emergency, resources will be overwhelmed very quickly.  Having local volunteers that are trained and willing to assist is crucial and the City of Culver City is grateful that we have great teams!

For the past several years the City has led a vigorous campaign to educate and inform its community on the importance of being prepared and having a plan.  The culmination of this effort is participation in an Annual City-Wide Disaster Drill which, is held on the same day as the California Great ShakeOut. This very important drill allows first responders and community responders (i.e. CERT and CCARES) to practice their emergency disaster plans alongside our community.

Participation is easy, at 7:00pm stop what you are doing, activate your family disaster plan (review it and your kit with your family) and place an “OK” sign in your window or on your door in a location most visible from the public right-of-way to signal that you and your family are “OK” (OK signs can be downloaded from our website, www.culvercity.org/emergencyprep).

In the event of a real disaster, if your family was not “OK”, you would post nothing and contact 9-1-1 to let them know of injuries, etc.

Every year we look for ways to expand our drill and practice different scenarios and opportunities and this year, is no different!

Instead of simulating one (1) disaster, we will be simulating three (3) in different areas of the city.  At 7:00pm we will activate our CERT and CCARES teams to assist in responding to these incidents.

There will be mock victims, search teams, first aid and triage stations, and much more! Locations will be announced the night of the drill.  Keep an eye out for our emergency volunteers! Say hello, observe them in action or, volunteer to be a victim! (here is the link to volunteer http://culvercitycert.org/volunteer-victims-needed/)
