Incident on the 1700 Block of Bancroft Way Safely Resolved

At 6:34pm, Berkeley Police responded to a report of suspicious circumstance in the Porta Johns on Roosevelt Street just north of Bancroft Way in Berkeley.  When officers arrived on scene they made contact with a subject who they determined was in crisis.  The individual was armed with a knife which he put to his own neck while he threatened to kill himself.  Crisis Intervention trained officers attempted to negotiate with the individual for approximately 45 minutes.

BPD had the individual contained on the 2200 block of Roosevelt Street.  During the negotiations the subject kept the knife to his throat while he repeatedly threatened to commit suicide by cop.

The situation was brought to a safe conclusion when the subject began to advance on officers.  The individual continued to advance despite repeated warnings. Officers hit the subject with multiple rounds from several less lethal launchers causing him to drop the knife and be safely taken into custody. He has been transported to a local hospital for medical evaluation.

The Berkeley Polie take pride in their efforts to keep their community safe.
