*UPDATE* #LASD Homicide Dets Assist La Verne PD w/ Officer Involved Shooting Invs, 2400 blk Foothill Blvd, La Verne

Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department Homicide Bureau detectives are continuing to assist La Verne Police Department in their investigation into the officer involved shooting that resulted in injuries to a male adult and a La Verne police officer.  The incident occurred on the 2400 block of Foothill Boulevard, La Verne on Saturday, September 23, 2017, at approximately 3:20 AM.

Detectives have learned that the La Verne police officers responded to the location regarding a family disturbance call.  Upon the officer’s arrival, they were confronted by a male adult who had an unknown dark object in his hand.  A La Verne police officer believed the object was a weapon and ordered the male adult to drop the object.  The male adult did not comply with the officer’s commands.

The male adult continued to approach the officer and fearing for his safety, he fired at least one round at the male adult.  After discharging his firearm, the officer determined the object in the male’s hand was not a weapon.  The male adult continued to approach the officer in a threatening manner.

In order to prevent an attack on himself, the officer deployed his taser and the taser was ineffective.  The male adult continued to advance toward the officer in a threatening manner despite being ordered to stop.

The male adult then reached toward his rear waistband area and made a threatening statement which led the officer to believe the male adult was arming himself.  Fearing for his safety, the officer discharged his firearm several times at the male adult striking him once in the upper torso area.  An assisting officer was also struck once in the lower torso area.

The male adult and the officer were transported to local hospitals.  The officer is being treated for non-life threatening injuries.  The male adult is being treated and his condition is unknown.  It is unknown if the male adult was armed at the time of this incident.  The investigation is ongoing and there is no additional information at this time.
