Chula Vista Police Officer stabbed by violent suspect. The suspect died after being shot by the officer.

On 9/19/17, at about 9:00pm, Chula Vista Police Dispatch received a call regarding a possible neighbor altercation/dispute in the 700 block of Melrose Avenue. CVPD officers arrived at the Reporting Party’s residence at about 10:05pm. During the initial patrol investigation, the victim/RP told officers an unknown male suspect threw a baseball/softball size piece of concrete at his head. The victim was struck in the shoulder and physical evidence of the felony assault was located at the scene. Officers deducted the suspect was in the backyard of 728 Monterey Avenue when the concrete was thrown at the victim.

At about 10:25pm, officers responded to the Monterey Avenue address in an attempt to identify and contact a possible suspect. The front door was answered by a female and she allowed the officers to enter the residence. As the first officer entered the residence through the front door, the suspect quickly and unexpectedly lunged around a corner and attacked the officer. The officer initially thought the suspect was punching him, but quickly realized he was being stabbed by the suspect. The victim officer was able to use his handgun to shoot the suspect to stop the violent attack. The other officer and civilian ride along (Department Chaplain) were able to assist the seriously injured officer out of the residence to wait for medics.

Other officers arrived and entered the residence to find the suspect on the floor with multiple gunshot wounds. The suspect was alert and Officers rendered aid until the suspect was transported to a local hospital via ambulance. Both the officer and suspect were transported to separate hospitals for treatment. The suspect was identified as 27 year old David Scott, who unfortunately died from his injuries during transport to the hospital. The officer was treated for approximately 5-6 stab wounds and was admitted to the hospital. The officer is expected to survive.

The Chula Vista Police Department’s Crimes of Violence Unit is handling the investigation with oversight from the San Diego District Attorney’s Office. If anyone has information regarding this incident, please call the Chula Vista Police Department at 619-691-5151.
