Driver Crawls Into the Rear of a moving vehicle to avoid Apprehension

A Delaware man crawled from the drivers seat to the rear hatch of a moving vehicle when a police officer attempted to stop his vehicle.
Another person in the vehicle took over the driving all while the vehicle was traveling at over 30 MPH.

On Thurs. Aug. 31 at approx. 1130 AM, a Southwestern Regional Officer observed a Hyundai Santa Fe commit a traffic violation on SR 216 in ManheimTwp. The Officer used his lights and siren in an attempt to stop the vehicle but the vehicle continued at a speed of 30 MPH, driving on and off of the roadway, never stopping for over one (1) mile. When the vehicle did stop in the area of Blue Hill Rd., the driver was unusually nervous and a small child was also in the vehicle. The officer suspected some type of problem and was allowed to check the interior of the vehicle. It was at this time that the officer discovered Delaware resident Shawn R. Walker, 39 YOA, hiding under a blanket in the hatch area of the vehicle. Walker then provided a false name to the officer.

The investigation revealed that Walker had a theft warrant in the State of MD. and that he was driving the vehicle, crawled to the rear hatch area, and had another passenger seated in the front passenger seat, take over driving. The incident caused the vehicle to be driven very erratically and we feel fortunate that vehicle occupants or others were not involved in a crash.

Walker was transported to the York County Intake Center and charged in addtion to the arrest warrant with Endangering the Welfare of a Child, False Identification to Police and several traffic offenses.
