Stay Away Advisory – Sunday, August 27, 2017

The “No to Marxism in America” demonstration scheduled for Sunday, August 27 at Civic Center Park in downtown Berkeley has been cancelled by the organizer. City officials are still expecting and preparing for large numbers of people in and around the park and downtown Berkeley. The City of Berkeley is advising community members to “stay away”.

The same day, another demonstration “Bay Area Against Hate”, will be held on UC Berkeley’s West Crescent lawn on Oxford and Center Streets beginning at 10:30am. Although no campus permit for this demonstration was sought or issued, for safety reasons UCPD will close the West Crescent entrance, which will greatly limit access to the west side of campus.

For the security and well-being of our campus community, UCPD is advising our students, staff, faculty and community members to avoid this area if possible, due to the potential for conflict and unlawful activity.
On Friday, the campus sent out a broader message to our community including information on supportive resources.

Be aware, traffic in the area between Center Street and University Avenue on Oxford will be restricted and the West Crescent (half circle roadway from Center St. to University Ave.) will be closed to vehicle traffic

UCPD will be providing updated information on these events via Nixle up to and throughout the day.

Again, due to safety concerns, we advise students and other community members to avoid this area on Sunday.
