Motorcyclist Killed by Drunk Driver

ROHNERT PARK – On 8/23/2017 at 5:56PM, the Rohnert Park Department of Public Safety received multiple calls of an injury collision in front of University Square on Snyder Lane.  It was reported that a motorcyclist and green Ford truck had collided and the motorcyclist was severely injured.

Officers and fire personnel arrived within three minutes to find the motorcyclist, 23 year old Rohnert Park resident, Fabian Carreras-Hermosillo, in the middle of the street with bystanders doing CPR.  The driver of the green truck was walking away from the scene towards the commercial establishments.  Officers quickly detained the driver and identified him as 63 year old Rohnert Park resident, Robert Bosch.  While officers were speaking to Bosch, he displayed signs that he was under the influence at the time of the collision.

Paramedics arrived within minutes and immediately transported Carreras-Hermosillo to the hospital.  Unfortunately due to the severity of the injuries, Carreras-Hermosillo died on the way to the hospital.  His family went to the hospital and was notified of his death.

Bosch was transported to the police station where he underwent an evaluation by a Drug Recognition Expert.  Upon completing the evaluation, it was opined Bosch was too impaired to safely operate a motor vehicle at the time of the collision. The investigation also revealed Bosch was driving with a preliminary blood alcohol content of .26%.  This is over three times the legal limit (.08%) to drive in California.

Bosch was transported to the Sonoma County Jail and booked for Felony Gross Vehicular Manslaughter while Intoxicated.  His bail was set at $100,000.

Coincidentally, the department is slated to conduct a DUI checkpoint Thursday evening in a multi-agency effort to combat impaired driving.

The Rohnert Park Department of Public Safety Major Accident investigation Team (MAIT) was called to take over the collision investigation which kept Snyder Lane closed for three hours.

After compiling evidence and witness statements, we believe the following events lead up to the collision.  Carreras-Hermosillo was riding his 2008 Honda CBR 600 south on Snyder lane in the far left lane. Bosch was driving his 1999 Ford Ranger north on Snyder Lane just past Rosana Way.  Bosch made a left lane change and got into the left turn lane to enter University Square.  Carreras-Hermosillo was approaching the intersection at approximately 30-35 MPH when Bosch made a left turn into the path of the motorcycle.  Carreras-Hermosillo could not slow his motorcycle due to the proximity of the truck and struck the right side of the bed between the cab and rear axle.  Carreras-Hermosillo was ejected from his motorcycle and landed in the street.  His helmet sustained major damage from the collision.  Bosch stopped his truck on the grass and curb after hitting a sign in the entrance to the parking lot and began to wander away from the scene.  There is no indication Bosch tried to render aid to Carreras-Hermosillo.

This is an ongoing investigation as more reconstruction work needs to be completed.  Anyone with information is asked to call Sgt. Marshall 707-584-2600.

The Department and City sends its condolences to the victim’s family during this very difficult time.
