On August 22, 2017 the Board of Supervisors unanimously appointed Rob Giordano as Sheriff following the unexpected retirement of former Sheriff Freitas due to health issues. Sheriff Giordano will serve as the Sonoma County Sheriff-Coroner through the end of Freitas’ term until January 7, 2019. He has served as Interim Sheriff since August 1, 2017.
Sheriff Giordano will not run for Sheriff in the upcoming election. He will spend the next 16 months emphasizing the delivery of quality services, building on community outreach, and fulfilling staffing needs.
Sheriff Giordano has been a peace officer in California for 28 years and has served with the Sheriff’s Office since 1996. His experience includes patrol, SWAT, management of various services, and investigations, including the Coroner Unit.
