Back to School Safety

Going back to school is an adjustment for the entire community. It affects the children, parents, teachers, and other drivers. With the new school year beginning, the Frankfort Police Department is dedicated to keeping our children safe, especially in school zone areas. We will be monitoring school zones to ensure the student’s safety. Whether you are a newer driver or have been driving for years, please review the following safety tips. School Zone Driving Safety Tips

• Be on the lookout for school zone signals and ALWAYS obey the speed limits.

• When entering a school zone, be sure to slow down and obey all traffic laws. School zones are observed from 7:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

• Always stop for school busses that are loading or unloading children.

• Watch out for school crossing guards and obey their signals.

• Be aware of and watch out for children near schools, bus stops, sidewalks, in the streets, in school parking lots, etc.

• Never pass other vehicles while driving in a school zone.

• Never change lanes while driving in a school zone.

• Never make U-Turns while driving in a school zone.

• Never text while driving in a school zone.

• Avoid using a cell phone, unless it is completely hands-free, while driving in a school zone. (This is the biggest complaint about drivers in our school zones)

The Frankfort Police Department will be hosting a Matter of Balance Class starting September 8th at the Frankfort Police Department. This eight week class meets every Friday from 1-3 p.m. A matter of balance is an award-winning program for anyone concerned about falls. This class will help to increase balance, flexibility, strength, and give you fall prevention strategies. To register for this free class please contact Officer Bender at (815)469-9435.
