UPDATE #LASD SEB, Barricaded Suspect Found Dead, 17600 block of Downey Avenue, Bellflower

The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department Special Enforcement Bureau (SEB) has concluded their tactical response regarding the barricaded suspect at the 17600 block of Downey Avenue, Bellflower. The suspect was found deceased in the location.

SEB deputies have learned that at approximately 3:00 AM, Thursday, August 17, 2017, Lakewood Station personnel responded to a “Burglary Now” call at the location. When deputies arrived, the informant, a woman who lives at the location and was the sole resident, told deputies that she locked herself in her bedroom and called "911" when an unknown man broke into her home. She said that she was able to escape uninjured through one of her bedroom windows.

The suspect, a male Hispanic adult, was discovered to have been involved in a traffic collision prior to breaking into the victim’s home.  He was driving a silver Toyota Yaris Sedan when he crashed at Downey Avenue just north of Jefferson Street, in Bellflower.  An unsuspecting Good Samaritan, driving a gold PT Cruiser, stopped to render aid when he was assaulted by the suspect.  During the struggle, the suspect overpowered the victim and drove off in his vehicle.

The suspect drove approximately 1 mile before causing a traffic collision at the 17600 block of Downey Avenue.  He exited the vehicle, ran to the informant/victim’s house, and gained entry by breaking a window.

The Good Samaritan/victim sustained injuries during the assault and was transported to a local hospital where he is in fair condition.

After several hours of verbal attempts by LASD Crisis Negotiations Team members to persuade the suspect’s surrender, the SEB special weapons team made entry into the residence where the suspect was located deceased.  The team continued to search the location for suspects and/or occupants with negative results.

The identity of the deceased suspect is unknown. The details surrounding his death are unknown at this time and will be determined by Los Angeles County Department of Medical Examiner-Coroner personnel.
