Traffic Safety Around Schools

With another school year that has begun, the Corcoran Police Department would like to offer some suggestions to help make our school zones safer and improve traffic flow / safety. Pedestrians, bicyclists, buses and parents all contribute to school zone congestion. Even though Corcoran is a small town, most schools in Corcoran are faced with traffic issues such as double parking, speeding, unsafe U-turns, and more. With increased traffic in school zones, police will be increasing their enforcement activities to ensure a higher level of traffic and pedestrian safety. The police department is asking motorist to exercise a heightened awareness in and around these areas. Potential hazards are much easier to perceive when driving at or below the school zone speed limit of 25 mph. Special attention must also be paid to buses displaying flashing red lights when on an undivided two-lane roadway. Motorists are required by the California Vehicle Code to stop and wait until the flashing red lights are turned off before passing a bus. Remember that children do not always follow the rules of the road. Oftentimes, they enter the street from between parked cars, ride their bikes through intersections without stopping, and skateboard into traffic. Parents who allow their children to ride bicycles to school should keep in mind that helmets are required for those under the age of 18. In addition, children riding bicycles must travel with the flow of traffic. When considering whether to allow your child to ride a bike to school, make sure your child is familiar with the rules of the road and basic bicycle safety. The Corcoran Police Department suggests following these simple tips to help make school zones safer for everyone and avoid citations: Don’t speed! The speed limit in school zones is 25 MPH. Remember to come to a complete stop at all stop signs and scan the area before proceeding. Don’t impede traffic by dropping children off in the middle of the street. Don’t double park. Don’t block intersections or driveways with your vehicle. Don’t make unlawful U-turns Always make sure that you and your children are wearing seatbelts. When walking, only cross at crosswalks.
Drive Safe! Walk Safe! Pedal Safe!
