Alert citizens assist police in two cases
San Leandro has had two package thefts of note recently. Alert citizens taking note of criminal activity and quickly relaying the information to the police made the capture of the suspects and recovery of property possible in both cases.
On August 4th, about 1:56 P.M., the San Leandro Police Department learned of a package theft in the 14900 block of Lark Street. The resident was alerted, via their motion activated camera system, of a person in front of their house. The victim watched the suspect steal a recently delivered child’s bicycle from the residence. The photos of the suspect and suspect vehicle were shared with other officers working. A short time later, a sergeant located the suspect driving the suspect vehicle at 105th Avenue and Pearmain Street in Oakland. The suspect was stopped and the loss was recovered. The case is currently pending review by the Alameda County District Attorney’s Office for prosecution.
On August 10th, about 5:22 P.M., the San Leandro Police Department received a call that a package theft had just occurred on Begier Avenue. A few minutes later, dispatch learned the same suspect had also stolen a car from Glen Drive. An alert Officer had seen the stolen car driving north on Bancroft Avenue and notified responding units. The stolen car and suspect were located at a hotel in the 8100 block of Mac Arthur Boulevard in Oakland. The suspect was arrested and the stolen package and car were recovered.
At this point there appears to be no connection between these cases.
We encourage residents to be alert and contact the police if they see anything suspicious.
