Justin Perry James Arrested For Attempted Murder of a Peace Officer

INCIDENT: Attempt Murder of a Peace Officer / Deputy Involved Shooting
LOCATION: 9000 block of Oak Glen Road, Cherry Valley
SUSPECT: Justin Perry James, age 45 a resident of Redlands
SUMMARY:
On Tuesday, August 8, 2017, at 12:04 pm, members of the Valley Regional Gang Team were conducting a follow up investigation at a residence in the 9000 block of Oak Glen Road. The suspect, Justin James Perry, had been identified as a gang member of a local Inland Empire gang. While deputies approached the residence, they observed Justin James inside the residence, running toward a back room and exiting the home from a side door. A foot pursuit began and deputies observed a black object in James’ right hand. The foot pursuit continued through a heavily foliaged wash area east of the residence. Despite the deputies repeated commands for James to stop, he ignored their demands and continued to flee. As they neared the bottom of the wash, a deputy could see James reaching into his waistband and then turn towards the deputy. The deputy fearing for his safety fired his duty weapon at the suspect striking him. The suspect was taken into custody and transported by medical aid to a local area hospital for treatment. The suspects injuries are not believed to be life threatening. A loaded handgun was recovered from the location where James was shot.
Sheriff’s Homicide Detail responded and are currently conducting the investigation.
