Grand Terrace- Deputy Involved Shooting

DATE/TIME: Thursday, July 27, 2017

INCIDENT:    Attempt Murder of a Peace Officer / Deputy Involved Shooting

LOCATION:  12800 block of Mirado Avenue, Grand Terrace

SUSPECT:   Michael Fitzgerald, 26 years old, resident of Grand Terrace

SUMMARY:
On Thursday, July 27, 2017 at 4:40 p.m. deputies responded to a residence in the 12800 block of Mirado Avenue in Grand Terrace following the report of possible shots fired. An adult male, later identified as Michael Fitzgerald, was determined to be inside the residence, firing a weapon. Deputies set a perimeter and began evacuations of nearby homes. Sheriff’s Specialized Enforcement Division(SED) also responded to the scene.  At approximately 6:20 p.m. a deputy involved shooting occurred and Fitzgerald was struck by gunfire.  Fitzgerald was transported to a local hospital and was pronounced deceased at 7:36 p.m.

Sheriff’s Homicide Detail responded to conduct the investigation. Investigators have determined that Fitzgerald was shooting a gun from inside the house and garage area, with some of the rounds traveling toward deputies and others striking neighboring homes. Fitzgerald was going in and out of the home and deputies could see that he was armed. SED members attempted to negotiate with Fitzgerald, without success. Fitzgerald opened the garage and SED deployed non-lethal rounds in an attempt to resolve the incident.  After being struck by non-lethal projectiles, Fitzgerald continued to move around the garage. A short time later Fitzgerald fired at deputies and deputies returned fire, striking Fitzgerald.
