Thieves Target Catalytic Converters on Honda Accords and Odysseys

The Simi Valley Police Department would like to warn the public of catalytic converter thefts from 2000-2003 Honda Accords and Odysseys. Other area cities have also reported thefts of catalytic converters from similar vehicles.

These particular cars and vans are targeted because of the precious metals contained in the converters (Platinum, Rhodium and Palladium). Thieves take the stolen catalytic converters to recycling and scrap yard businesses for salvage compensation or sell them on the black market.

Car owners feel the sting when forced to cough up between $1,000 and $3,000 for new converters and exhaust system repairs. Even with comprehensive insurance, deductibles can still result in $500 to $1,000 in out-of-pocket expenses.

The Simi Valley Police Department would suggest the following crime prevention tips:

 Report any suspicious subjects, sounds and out of the ordinary circumstances to the police. (805) 583-6950.

 Always remove the keys, roll up the windows and lock your vehicle.

 Park your vehicle in your driveway with the rear doors closest to your residence.

 Leave your exterior lights on throughout the night, or install motion detector lighting. Additional lighting may make a prowler or thief more visible or less likely to target your vehicle.

 If you park on the street, choose a well-lit area and trim back any trees and/or bushes that may block your view of your vehicle.
