SLPD arrests two juveniles in connection with a series of school burglaries

On July 11th, 2017, SLPD detectives arrested two male juveniles out of San Leandro and Oakland responsible for a series of elementary school burglaries.

Between May and June this year, several San Leandro public schools were burglarized. These schools include Washington, Roosevelt, McKinley, Jefferson and Wilson Elementary schools. The loss in all of these cases were Apple iPads and MacBook laptops.

Recently, detectives received a break in the case when a latent fingerprint recovered at one of the crime scenes revealed the identity of a 13 yr. old male student at Bancroft Middle School and former student of Washington Elementary school.

The male juvenile suspect was located at home and arrested based on the fingerprint evidence. During the investigation, the name of a second suspect was discovered who had also been involved in these burglaries.

The second suspect, also a 13 yr. old male student at Bancroft Middle School was located at his home in Oakland. A search of the boy’s home revealed numerous loss items belonging to the San Leandro Unified School District, all stolen in these burglaries. The second male suspect was also arrested.

“We are extremely pleased to have made arrests in these cases and return the items to the classroom where they are much needed,” said Lieutenant Isaac Benabou. “It’s unusual for us to arrest such young suspects responsible for a series of burglaries. These are brazen acts, and we hope that their arrests will prevent this behavior in the future.”

The investigation into these cases in ongoing as additional suspects may be involved and many stolen items are still outstanding.
