NOVATO POLICE TRAINED IN USE OF OVERDOSE REVERSING MEDICATION

In partnership with Marin County Health and Human Services (HHS), Novato Police officers have received training in the use of Naloxone. Naloxone is a nasal spray which almost instantly reverses the effects of an opioid overdose. In the past, Naloxone could only be administered in the field by emergency medical personnel. Marin County HHS Dr. Jeff Deviro coordinated the training sessions and HHS provided the nasal spray kits now carried in all patrol cars, police motorcycles, and detective vehicles.

In the past five years, the leading cause of accidental death in Marin County has been drug overdose. Most of the drug overdoses are linked to opioids, which includes Heroin and medications such as Vicodin, Codeine, and Fentanyl.

One of the main priorities of the Novato Police Department is the preservation of life. Having the Naloxone kits in each vehicle will help this life saving tool arrive at the scene of a medical emergency sooner and allow officers to begin lifesaving measures immediately. Although we hope to never have to use the tool, our officers will be prepared.
