Driver Arrested for Possession of a Firearm (17-8447)

On June 28, 2017, the Santa Rosa Police Department Gang Crimes Team Detectives were working street level enforcement focusing on the reduction of violence in our city.

At approximately 2:42 p.m., detectives working as a 2-unit uniformed patrol team conducted a traffic stop on a vehicle in the area of Dutton Avenue and South Avenue. The traffic stop was for a vehicle code violation.

During the traffic stop, the driver was unable to produce a valid driver’s license, however, he was in possession of a California Identification Card. As detectives spoke to the driver and the passenger of the vehicle, the detectives could smell a strong odor of marijuana emitting from the interior of the vehicle. As detectives asked the driver about the marijuana, he became uncooperative, nervous and irrational.

The detectives continued their investigation and had the driver and passenger exit the vehicle. During a pat search of the driver, a detective located a firearm concealed in the driver’s waistband. (See attached photograph). The firearm, a semi-automatic handgun, was loaded with 13 live rounds.

The driver was identified as Adrian Aurrelo Aldama, a 30-year-old Santa Rosa resident.
Aldama was arrested and booked into the Sonoma County Main Adult Detention Facility. Aldama was booked on the following charges: PC 25400(a)(1) – Carrying a Concealed Firearm in a Vehicle, PC 25850(a) – Carrying a Loaded Firearm in Public, and PC 32310 – Possession of Large/High Capacity Magazine.

Aldama claimed the concealed firearm belonged to a family member. Detectives are following-up on the rightful owner of the firearm.

The passenger was identified and released at the scene at the conclusion of the detectives’ investigation.
