Be alert. Utility Scams are on the rise. ComEd will NEVER call you to ask you for cash or to buy a prepaid card!

Utility Scams

We recently learned a local business owner was contacted by an individual claiming to be a representative from ComEd. Attached is the alert which ComEd has placed on their website and in the utility bill mailings.

When asked, the fake representative gave the business owner a fake name, a return phone number (with an (855) area code), along with an extension to call back. The voice prompts a recording when you call this number and says you have reached ComEd and it appears to be the same as the real ComEd. The fake representative will advise the caller to purchase a prepaid credit card and call back to give them the number so their ComEd service is not disconnected.

ComEd is aware of this type of scam and advises to contact them directly if you have any questions regarding your personal or business account. This type of scam has been happening in other communities so please remain vigilant and report suspicious activity to the police department.
