Vehicle vs Bicyclist Major Injury Collision at Sebastopol Rd and Stony Point Rd

For Immediate Release
DATE: June 27th, 2017

FROM: Sergeant Summer Black

SUBJECT: Vehicle / Bicycle Collision

On Tuesday June 27th 2017, at approximately 7:20pm, Santa Rosa Police Officers were dispatched to the intersection of Stony Point Rd and Sebastopol Rd for a vehicle collision involving a bicyclist. Officers arriving at the scene found the male bicyclist lying on the ground in the intersection. He was unresponsive with significant injuries. The bicyclist was immediately attended to by Santa Rosa Fire Personnel and Paramedics from Sonoma Life Support. The driver of the vehicle, a white 2013 Honda Civic, had remained at the scene after the collision. The bicyclist, identified as 52-year-old Jose Tinoco of Santa Rosa was transported to a local hospital with life threatening injuries, including major brain trauma. The driver of the Honda was identified as 22-year-old Tania Natal of Gualala.

Further investigation revealed that Tinoco was riding his bicycle eastbound on Sebastopol Rd, when he began crossing the intersection with Stony Point Rd against a red light. Natal was driving northbound on Stony Point Rd. Natal was following traffic through the intersection on a green light. Per her statement and the statement of witnesses, Tinoco crossed into traffic and was struck by Natal’s vehicle. Tinoco struck the vehicle’s windshield and then fell to the ground. Natal stopped her vehicle immediately after the collision. It does not appear that Natal had time to see Tinoco or stop for him. She could not avoid colliding with him.

Santa Rosa Police Accident Investigators responded the scene. Natal was interviewed by investigators at the police department. Natal had no signs or symptoms of alcohol intoxication or other impairment and is cooperating with the investigation. Preliminary toxicology tests indicated that Tinoco may have been riding his bicycle while under the influence of alcohol.

Anyone that witnessed this collision is encouraged to contact Officer Jeff Woods of the Santa Rosa Police Department Traffic Bureau at (707) 543-3636.

Media inquiries should be directed to Sergeant Summer Black at (707)543-4108.
