On June 27th at 6:07 PM, APD officers were dispatched to the 600 block of South Nelson on a trespass involving a domestic violence incident. Two officers were attempting to detain Jason Magana Herrera, a 35 year old male, on the parking lot of the apartments. Herrera began physically fighting with the officers. The officers tried to control Herrera using a taser. He pulled the taser probes out and broke free from the officers. Herrera pulled out a handgun and ran a short distance from the officers. Herrera turned and pointed the handgun at the officers. One officer fired his handgun to protect both officers. The officer’s shots hit Herrera. Herrera died at the scene. One officer was taken to the hospital with minor injuries. Justice of the Peace Debbie Horn has ordered an autopsy. The Amarillo Police Department Special Crimes Unit is investigating the incident.
