Two suspects arrested in June 20th kidnapping/home invasion incident on Lake Mead Drive.

On June 20, 2016, at 2:24 a.m., a caller dialed 9-1-1 to report a residence across the street from her, on the 32900 block of Lake Mead Dr. was being burglarized.  The reporting told Fremont Police dispatchers that she heard a loud crash and saw two people getting into the garage of the residence.  She said that one of the males got into the garage and the second one was standing outside,  possibly acting as a lookout. She then updated dispatchers and said she could no longer see anyone and didn't know if her neighbors were home.

Fremont Police Department patrol officers were immediately dispatched and quickly arrived on scene.  The first arriving officers observed what appeared to be the beams of a flashlight emitting from the interior of the garage.  Officers also heard the sound of individuals quickly jumping over fences and saw one suspect on the roof of a nearby residence.  As a large perimeter was quickly established around the block, we requested additional outside agency assistance. Union City patrol officers and a K9 Unit, a Hayward K9 Unit, a CHP helicopter and a Fremont Fire Department UAV (drone) team all responded.  In addition, Newark and Milpitas Police Departments assisted by handling emergency calls in our City while all of our units were tied up on this incident.

During the initial search for the suspects, Fremont officers located a vehicle parked on Lake Candlewood Street with its door open.  The vehicle was found to have recently been reported stolen out of Burlingame.

At 3:26 a.m., a CHP Helicopter Officer observed a suspect hiding in the backyard of a residence on the 32900 block of Lake Candlewood Street. This residence backs up to the victim residence.  Multiple officers went to the backyard and at 3:52 a.m., they located and arrested Antonio Gainey, a 31 year old Oakland resident, with the assistance of a K9.  Gainey was found to have a lengthy criminal history which included a prior felony conviction for first degree burglary.

During a search of the residence on Lake Mead Dr., a large scale marijuana grow was located inside.  The Southern Alameda County Major Crimes Task Force was alerted and took over the marijuana grow portion of the investigation.

As officers continued to search for the other suspects, a Fremont officer who was posted on the perimeter near the 33000 block of Lake Candlewood Street, (approximately ten houses away from the initial victim residence), heard a resident making a loud noise at 4:44 a.m.  The officer looked up and could see two people struggling through a second story window.   The officer advised via police radio that he observed what he believed to be a suspect inside of the residence choking the victim. The victim, later identified as a 67 year old male victim, came to the glass sliding door yelling something similar to, "Help!  Help!  He's in my house.”  The victim was out of breath and kept pointing back into his residence, indicating someone was currently inside.

Fremont officers surrounded the second victim residence and could hear the sound of heavy footsteps and glass breaking inside the residence.  Officers believed the suspect was exiting the house and attempting to flee north.  At 4:45 a.m. officers breached the front door and located the second suspect, Kenneth Stanley a 32 year old Oakland resident, inside the home.  Stanley was found to be in possession of the vehicle ignition key which operated the stolen vehicle located earlier on Lake Crandlewood St.  Stanley was also found to have a lengthy criminal history which included prior convictions for burglary, possession of a stolen vehicle and firearms possession.

The victim was interviewed and relayed that earlier in the morning he had become aware the police were in the area of his residence searching for suspects.  The victim remembered leaving his second story sliding glass door open during the evening for weather purposes and decided to go close it.  Upon closing the glass door, the victim located Stanley in his house hiding.  The victim, knowing the police were still outside his residence, screamed and yelled for help.  He immediately ran toward the sliding glass door in an effort to alert police of the suspects presence.  Stanley, who is 5'10" / 185lbs; compared to the 5'4" and 138lb victim, grabbed the victim, put his arm around his neck and told him to "shut up" and "be quiet." As the victim physically fought to get to the door, Stanley physically overpowered him.  Stanley pulled the victim further away and eventually down onto the ground (a distance approx. 15'-20' from the door).  The victim began to have trouble breathing as he physically fought with the suspect.  Stanley pleaded with the victim to stay quiet and offered the victim money if he stopped yelling.  The victim did not stop yelling and continued to elbow Stanley in an effort to get free.  Eventually the victim was able to break away from Stanley and he ran to the glass door and yelled to the police that the suspect was inside.  The victim was transported to a local hospital to be treated for visible injuries and pain to his neck and back.

Additional physical evidence, witness statements and suspect statements tied Stanley and Gainey to the crimes.  Further checks with other local police departments confirmed the two had been contacted together multiple times, during prior police contacts.

On June 22, 2017, suspect Kenneth Stanley was charged with a host of felony charges including assault with a deadly weapon (not a firearm), false imprisonment with violence, threatening a witnesses using violence, two counts of residential burglary (one being an occupied residence), and possession of a stolen vehicle.

On the same date, suspect Antonio Gainey was charged with felony residential burglary and possession of a stolen vehicle.
