Carjacking suspect arrested in Illinois

Carjacking suspect arrested for Fremont incident in Addison, Illinois after detectives use Community Cameras to solve crime.

On June 19, 2017, Fremont patrol officers responded and to the Valero Gas Station located at the intersection of Mowry Ave. and Fremont Bl. on multiple reports of a carjacking.  Officers learned a suspect attempted to carjack one victim but was unsuccessful.  The suspect then found a second victim, carjacked their vehicle and then fled the scene. Officers believed the same suspect had also attempted to carjack a victim the previous day (6/18/17) at the 76 Gas Station on Auto Mall Pkwy. and Osgood Rd.

During the attempt incident on June 18, the suspect was unsuccessful and fled in an older black BMW.  As officers were searching the area immediately following the most recent incident, a patrol officer located a possible matching BMW parked near Mowry Ave. and Argonaut Way.  Investigators checked the BMW in the City's Community Camera system and matched the vehicle to both carjackings.  With the information from victims, witnesses, and the Community Camera system, robbery detectives were able to identify the BMW driver.

A victim assisted by positively identifying the driver of the BMW as the carjacking suspect.  Officers followed up by obtaining an arrest warrant for the suspect.  Detectives began searching for the suspect in Fremont, San Leandro, Hayward, and San Jose.

Members of the Special Investigations Unit (SIU) were able to track the suspect to an area in Addison, Illinois.  SIU began coordinating with Addison Police Department Detectives to locate the suspect.  On June 23, Addison Police Detectives located the suspect who attempted to lie about his identity.  APD Detectives were fully aware of his identify based on photographs and tattoo images provided by FPD.

The suspect provided the location of the carjacked vehicle which FPD Detectives were able to recover.  Suspect Donis Rivas (29 years old, Fremont) was arrested by APD for carjacking and is currently awaiting extradition back to California.

No booking photo available.  Surveillance image of suspect Rivas attached.
