Update #LASD Deputy-Involved Shooting, 3 Deputies Injured, Suspect Not Struck, 6000 blk Rosemead Bl, Pico Rivera
Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department detectives from Internal Affairs Bureau are continuing their investigation into the circumstances surrounding a Deputy-Involved Shooting that occurred on Monday, June 26, 2017 in the 6000 block Rosemead Blvd, Pico Rivera.
Detectives have learned that deputies from Pico Rivera Station responded to a local park at approximately 8:34 a.m. regarding a suspicious person who was “doing donuts” or driving a vehicle in a tight circle while accelerating, on a baseball field.
When the first deputy arrived, he saw the suspect conducting the unsafe and dangerous “donut” maneuver in the baseball field. Seeing that the reckless act showed no regard for public safety at the popular park, the deputy immediately ordered the suspect to stop. The suspect did not comply with orders and instead sideswiped the deputy’s patrol vehicle with his silver colored, dual sport Toyota pickup truck. The suspect then drove around the radio car and rammed the deputy’s patrol vehicle, head-on, twice.
As the deputy tried to reverse and secure a safe distance from the suspect’s assault, a subsequent deputy-involved shooting occurred.
With the assistance of arriving deputies, additional orders were given for the suspect to cooperate and exit the vehicle. The suspect refused to comply, and as the deputies approached the suspect on foot, the suspect exited his vehicle and ran towards the deputies. A taser was then utilized to gain the suspect’s compliance, however it was ineffective and as a violent struggle ensued, takedown tactics were exercised and the suspect was successfully controlled and taken into custody.
Three deputies sustained minor injuries and were transported to a local hospital for treatment.
The suspect, a male Hispanic adult, and sole occupant of the truck, was not struck by gunfire. However, he was transported to a local hospital where he remains for a medical clearance for booking.
The patrol vehicle sustained damage to its front bumper and side where it was sideswiped.
The investigation is ongoing and there is no additional information available at this time.
Whenever a Deputy Involved Shooting occurs involving Los Angeles County Sheriff's deputies, and the suspect(s) is not wounded, multiple investigations immediately begin at the scene. These include separate investigations by the Sheriff's Internal Affairs Bureau as well as Sheriff's station or Detective Division investigators. The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department immediately notifies the Office of the Inspector General who sends a representative to the incident scene and provides independent oversight throughout the investigative process. Once concluded, every aspect of the shooting is reviewed by the Sheriff's Executive Force Review Committee.
