A Special Happy Father's Day Message From The Desk Of Sheriff Victor Hill
The word "sheriff," comes from the Saxon words "scyre," meaning county, and "reve," meaning keeper. This was to describe that the Sheriff was and still is to this day, the "keeper of the county". I have found that being "the keeper of the county" in its most simplistic sense is being a father. As I walk the halls of the jail that I keep, I have observed that the majority are young men and women who never had a strong strict father figure to discipline and keep them in line.
Like many of our youth in our county, I was raised by my mother. My grandmother lived with us and like Timothy, I was fortunate to have these two God fearing women rear me.
However, as great as these two women were and still are, children need a father or a father figure to help guide them though the journey of life. I was fortunate to have had many fathers. Our next door neighbor (Mr. Adams) and across the street neighbor (Mr. Wilder) looked out for us, treated me as their son, and taught me much. My best freind's father (Mr. Roper) took me in as a son and I learned much from his wisdom as well. Around the block from our home was a martial arts master (Sifu Glen Beufort) who took me on as a student for free until I was old enough to work and pay for the training. Mr. Beufort hardened and prepared me to face any opponent or situation in life. My point is, I was raised by a village of men who did not hesitate to be the father I needed. I owe these men a great deal. Because of them, even though I have no biological children of my own, I owe it to every child I encounter in our county to do for them what was done for me. I am extremely proud that some of my Godchildren work at the Sheriff's Office today, and have dedicated their lives to defending those who cannot defend themselves.
There are many men in Clayton County who remind me of my childhood neighborhood of fathers. Men like Anthony Williams and Terry Robinson who founded the organization DADS to offer themselves and other strong men as fathers to the fatherless. We also have other good men who are fathers of protection to their communities in Clayton County who serve on my "posse" with our "citizen's radio patrol" making the single mothers with children in their neighborhoods feel safer. You will never hear much about these fathers who are unsung heroes and they deserve a special Happy Father's Day from us all!
I wish every father in Clayton County a Happy Father's Day. I encourage all fathers to not just continue to do a good job of being a father to their children, but to also be a father to every child they can so that we can become the village of men who help raise them all.
In conclusion, rather our father's are living or dead, present or absent, we can all take comfort that we have a Heavenly Father. Our Father in the heavens said the words all sons long to hear from a father in 2 Samuel 7:14-15. In those verses he said: "I will be his Father and he will be my son. When he does wrong, I will punish him with a rod wielded by men. But my love will never be taken away from him". Let us not forget to wish The Supreme Father Of The Universe Happy Father's Day as well.
