Results of Santa Rosa DUI/Driver’s License Checkpoint

Santa Rosa, CA – The Santa Rosa Police Department Traffic Unit conducted a DUI/Driver’s License Checkpoint on Friday, June 16th 2017, in Santa Rosa between the hours of 8:00 p.m. and 2:00 a.m. The checkpoint was located on Farmers Lane, southbound from Sonoma Avenue. Checkpoints are placed in locations that have the greatest opportunity for achieving drunk and drugged driving deterrence and provide the greatest safety for officers and the public. In addition to Santa Rosa Officers, Officers from CHP, Rohnert Park, Cotati, and Sebastopol also participated.

DUI/Driver’s License Checkpoints have been shown to lower DUI deaths and injuries. A major component of these checkpoints are the deterrent effects it has on those who might drive drunk or drugged impaired, bringing about more awareness and encouraging everyone to use sober designated drivers.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), checkpoints have provided the most effective documented results of any of the DUI enforcement strategies, while also yielding considerable cost savings of $6 for every $1 spent. Ninety Percent of California drivers approve of checkpoints.

The firearm was discovered during a search of the vehicle that Ramos had been driving. Gonzalez was the registered owner of that vehicle. Ramos was charged with misdemeanor possession of the firearm and Gonzalez was charged with felony possession, due to a previous felony conviction. Ramos was also charged with felony possession of narcotics when illegal drugs were discovered hidden on his person while being booked into the Sonoma County Jail.
