Vandalism to a Place of Worship
On June 10, 2017, about 1410 hours, Officers responded to a "shots fired" call for service at 1650 Manor Boulevard (St. Felicitas Church). The person reporting this incident also provided a description of a person who they believed was responsible for discharging a firearm. When officers arrived in the area, the person was located a short distance from the church. He was not compliant with commands that were given by officers and a struggle ensued. During the struggle, a gun was forcibly removed the suspect's waistband and the suspect was taken into custody. After which, officers conducted a security check of the church and it was discovered that eight rounds had been fired into a statue at the church. There was no other damage found at the church.
San Leandro Police Lieutenant Ted Henderson said, “While we are not able to share the full details of this incident because it is still an active investigation, please know that we are taking this investigation seriously. We are investigating this act of vandalism as a hate crime. There is simply no place and no excuse for vandalism aimed at a place of worship in our society. The person responsible for this act is in custody and we have no information or evidence that there are any additional threats directed at the church or their congregation.”
