Suspect charged in San Leandro officer involved shooting
On Thursday, June 8th San Leandro Police investigators met with Alameda County District Attorney and presented their case against the man who attempted to strike police officers with a stolen vehicle.
The case against 40-year old Steven England of Hayward, CA included charges of attempt murder, auto theft, and possession of stolen property.
In the early morning hours of June 4th, 2017, England was seen by officers driving a stolen van in the area of St. May's Ave in San Leandro. The officers were in full police uniform and driving a marked police vehicle. The officers attempted to contact England however he sped off driving at a high rate of speed through a residential area.
England pulled into a private driveway on St. Marys Ave. and refused to comply with officer's orders to exit the vehicle. After a few minutes, England started the van and drove through the resident’s front yard, damaging a tree and a retaining wall. England redirected the stolen van onto the street and accelerated towards the officers.
Several commands were given to England to stop, yet he refused and intentionally drove his stolen van directly towards the officers in an aggressive manner. Officers, fearing for their lives were forced to draw their weapons and fire upon England to stop the threat of being run over.
England was struck by the officers’ gunfire causing him to instantly surrender and exit the vehicle. Officers immediately approached England and provided medical aid. England remains at a local hospital in stable condition.
England has been charged with assault on a police officer and auto theft with prior. Also, a petition was filed to violate England's county probation.
"We have seen an increase of violent crimes against officers in the recent months," said Lt. Isaac Benabou. "The job of a police officer continues to be a dangerous and deadly profession everywhere. We hope these aggressions towards officers subside as to avoid these types of encounters."
