SLPD investigates attempt homicide on gas station attendant

On Sunday, June 4th, 2017, officers from the San Leandro Police Department were dispatched to the Chevron gas station at 15201 Washington Ave. regarding a robbery.

Just before 8:00 p.m. that evening, a black male suspect entered the gas station convenience store and approached the counter. The suspect appeared to be interested in making a purchase, but quickly produced a handgun and pointed it towards the store clerk and demanded money.

The solo store employee began to comply with the suspect's demands by opening the cash register. While doing so and for no apparent reason, the suspect fired his weapon striking the employee. The suspect then grabbed the cash till and fled the store with the money.

The wounded clerk laid in the store for several minutes until he was able to call for help. The victim is receiving care at a local hospital and is listed in critical condition.

Detectives have located video surveillance and other items of evidence which will be processed for investigative leads.

"Our thoughts and prayers go out to the victim and his family for this senseless crime" said Lt. Isaac Benabou. "Our detectives are working diligently to identify the suspect and bring him to justice."

The suspect is described as a black male adult, 5'08-5'11, 175-200 lbs, wearing a gray hooded sweatshirt, dark colored pants, and white shoes.
