Construction Continues on PA 33 South Bridge in Bethlehem Township

Construction for the PA 33 South bridge, spanning US 22 in Bethlehem Township, Northampton County, continues as part of the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation’s (PennDOT) Rapid Bridge Replacement Project. Replacement of this bridge will allow PennDOT to remove it from Northampton County’s structurally deficient bridge list. Construction of the bridge is expected to begin the week of Monday, June 12. During this time, travel lanes will remain open but will be shifted on both US 22 and PA 33. Motorists are advised to slow down and be aware of new traffic patterns that will be in place. A nighttime detour for demolition is scheduled Monday, June 12 to Friday June 16 from 10.30 p.m. to 5.30 a.m.  During this time, US 22 west traffic will be detoured on PA 33 north to Hecktown Road and then back to PA 33 south to US 22. Traffic traveling from US 22 east will be detoured on PA 33 south to William Penn Highway back to PA 33 north to US 22. The project is scheduled to be completed in late December. Schedules are subject to change. ------------- This bridge is referred to as JV-198 and is one out of the 558 bridges being replaced under the Rapid Bridge Replacement Project. JV references the joint-venture partnership between Walsh/Granite, which is leading construction for the entire project. The Rapid Bridge Replacement Project is a public-private partnership (P3) between PennDOT and Plenary Walsh Keystone Partners (PWKP), under which PWKP will finance, design, replace, and maintain the bridges for 25 years. The P3 approach will allow PennDOT to replace the bridges more quickly while achieving significant savings and minimizing impact on motorists.
