Investigators arrest a subject for Felony DUI/Vehicular Manslaughter following a fatal collision

INCIDENT: Fatal Traffic Collision
LOCATION: Hellman Avenue near 8Th Street, Rancho Cucamonga
SUSPECT: Herendira Diaz De La Vega, 24 years old, resident of Oregon
VICTIM: Abel Rivera, 60 years old, resident of Rancho Cucamonga
SUMMARY:
On Sunday, June 4, 2017 at 12:46 a.m. Diaz De La Vega was driving vehicle #1, a gray 2017 Nissan Maxima, south on Hellman Avenue from Arrow Route and was approaching the intersection with 8Th Street. At the same time, Vehicle #2, a 2002 Chevrolet Silverado was traveling east on 8Th from Vineyard Avenue. The victim, Abel Rivera was riding as a passenger in the back seat of vehicle #2. Vehicle #2 stopped for the intersection controlled by a stop sign in all four directions and then proceeded through the intersection. Vehicle #1 was traveling at a high rate of speed and failed to stop at the stop sign and collided with the driver side of vehicle #2. As a result of the collision, the back end of the cab area was torn open and the vehicle rolled over, ejecting Rivera. Rivera was later pronounced deceased at the scene.
Diaz De La Vega was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence and was booked at West Valley Detention Center for Vehicle Manslaughter with gross negligence, as well as felony DUI.
