At approximately 3:00 a.m. on June 4th, 2017,  officers from the San Leandro Police Department were attempting to contact a 40-year-old male subject who was driving a stolen van in the 800 block of St. Marys Ave.  

During the encounter the two involved officers fired their handguns at the suspect, striking him at least one time.  Once the suspect was safely detained, officers rendered medical aid immediately. 

SLPD investigators are on scene and have begun an in-depth investigation into the circumstances that led up to the shooting. Detectives are reviewing police body camera footage and searching for additional video surveillance in the area. Both involved officers are uninjured and cooperating with the investigation. 

The male suspect is receiving treatment at a local hospital for non-life threatening injuries. The suspect is alert, oriented and has been speaking to detectives. 

The Alameda County Sheriff's Crime Lab has responded to the scene at our request to process for evidence and general analysis. The Alameda County District Attorney's office was also notified of the incident. SLPD investigators will work closely with the District Attorney's office in keeping them apprised of the facts. 

"We expect to know more about the facts of this incident in the coming days," said Lt. Isaac Benabou.  "Most officers work their entire career without having the need to discharge their firearm. We are fortunate that this incident did not end more tragically for those involved."
