On Monday, June 5, EPA will begin a removal action to support Colorado Division of Reclamation, Mining and Safety (DRMS) activities at the Pride of the West Mill near Howardsville, Colo. This action, which involves assisting DRMS with dewatering and closing a tailings pond at the mill site, has the potential to impact the Animas River (discoloration or turbidity) and may last at least several weeks. Personnel will continue monitoring conditions of the Animas River and may revise this alert as necessary.
