May 29, 2017 – Officer Involved Shooting Incident

Fremont Police Detectives are currently investigating an officer involved shooting that occurred today just before 4:00 p.m.

At 3:55 p.m. a Fremont Police Patrol Officer was in the 5000 block of Mowry Ave (near Blacow Rd.).  The officer was flagged down in the parking lot and given information that a male was in the area brandishing and waving a metal pipe at people.  The officer located the male suspect and requested cover units.   Moments later the officer put out over the radio that the suspect was running.  The officer gave chase on foot, while the suspect remained armed with the pipe. When they reached the south parking lot of the supermarket, a confrontation between the officer and suspect took place.  During the confrontation the officer fired his duty weapon striking the suspect.

Medical care was provided at the scene by Fremont Officers and Fremont Fire Paramedics.  The suspect was transported to a trauma center and is currently receiving medical treatment.  Our officer was unharmed and the weapon (metal pipe) was recovered at the scene.

Over the next few days, detectives will interview witnesses, collect evidence and complete their initial fact finding.  As with past practice, we will have a more detailed release to share later in the week.

The Alameda County District Attorney’s Office has been notified and is conducting a separate parallel investigation.
