Throughout Sunday investigators with the Janesville Police Department conducted follow up on the homicide reported during the early morning hours or May 28th at 116 S. Franklin St. Several witnesses identified the shooter as 32 year old Beloit resident Barquis Odom.

Officers with the Janesville Police Department Street Crimes Unit (SCU) located a vehicle which was being driven by Odom traveling in the city’s west side. At approximately 9:15 p.m. patrol units, along with SCU officers and detectives conducted a high risk traffic stop on Odom’s vehicle on Rockport Rd just west of Afton Rd. Odom was the sole occupant of the vehicle at the time of the stop and he was taken into custody without incident.

The homicide appears to have started as a verbal altercation outside 116 S. Franklin St between Odom and the victim. During the argument, Odom produced a handgun and shot the victim. Odom fled the scene after shooting the victim.

Odom was arrested and held at the Rock County Jail pending his initial court appearance for the following offenses:

• ss940.04(1)(a) 1st Degree Intentional Homicide
• ss941.29(2) Possession of Firearm by Felon

Additional information regarding the victim’s identity will come from the Rock County Medical Examiners Officer once family notifications are complete.
