Potential Severe Weather. Please use caution while traveling. Click link for more information. Sheriff Victor Hill
A continuous stream of deep/sub-tropical moisture coupled with a series of low-pressure systems will result in widespread rain and scattered embedded thunderstorms across north and central Georgia. Through Wednesday afternoon, we're looking at TWO (2) more rounds of potentially heavier rainfall, along with a risk for strong to severe thunderstorms. Please see below for more details.
Today's (Tuesday) Timing, Threats and Impacts:
Rain is expected to increase in coverage and pick up in intensity through this morning.
*An additional 1 to 2 inches is expected with locally higher amounts.
*Risk for localized Flash Flooding will increase this morning, especially over urban and low lying/poor drainage areas, and in the mountains of north Georgia
*Strong to severe thunderstorms are possible, mainly along and south of a Columbus to Macon to Augusta line.
*Primary threats w/ storms:
*Damaging winds 40-60 MPH -- knocking down trees and power lines / some minor structural damage possible
* Brief tornadoes
*Torrential rainfall (1/2 to 1 inch rainfall amounts in less than 1 hour)
*Conditions improve this afternoon (between 12-3PM) from west to east as the area of low pressure moves east of the area
Current Weather Hazards:
*A Flash Flood WATCH is now in effect for much of central and north Georgia, through Wednesday afternoon – Clayton County is included
*2 to 4 inches of rain through Wednesday w/ locally higher amounts possible
Outlook for Wednesday --
*A strong cold front will send the final "wave" of potentially heavy rain along with a few thunderstorms across the area late in the overnight Tuesday into Wednesday.
*SEVERE -- there is a SLIGHT risk for severe storms
*HEAVY RAIN / FLOODING -- an additional 1 to 2 inches is not out of the question.
*Flood/Flash Flood potential will continue to exist, and be highest over areas that receive the most rainfall today.
*Cold front should sweep west-to-east across the area between 3PM and 11PM Wednesday PM -- behind the front, much drier and cooler air will move in.
All residents of Clayton County please use extreme caution when traveling throughout these next couple of waves of bad weather. Should you come across any areas with flooding or storm related damage, follow appropriate procedures for notification. Contact EMA via email for any areas of concern throughout these next few days. Be safe!
