News Release - 2017 PASADENA POLICE AND FIRE MEMORIAL HONORS FALLEN HEROES

PASADENA, CA – On Thursday, May 25, 2017 at 10:00 AM, the City of Pasadena will host the 2017 Pasadena Police and Fire Memorial in front of Pasadena City Hall. This is the 6th year that City Officials, Police and Fire personnel and community members will honor Pasadena’s first responders who died in the line of duty serving the people that live, work and visit in Pasadena.

The program will include brief speeches from Vice Mayor John Kennedy, Police Chief Phillip L. Sanchez and Fire Chief Bertral Washington. The event incorporates the Presentation of Colors, the National Anthem, the ceremonial Law Enforcement 21-Gun Salute, Fire Service Ringing of the Bell, and Taps by the United States Marine Corp. Family members of the fallen heroes will be honored with a public reading of their family member’s name. To date, seven Pasadena Police Officers and nine Firefighters have lost their lives serving the Pasadena community.

During 2016 in the United States, numerous law enforcement officers and firefighters lost their lives in public service, 145 police officers died In the Line of Duty Deaths (63 by gunfire), as reported by https://www.odmp.org/search/year/2016, and 89 firefighter On-duty fatalities, as reported by http://www.firerescuemagazine.com/articles/2017/01/on-duty-deaths-and-advancing-hoselines-in-2016.html.

The event, in association with National Police Week, is open to the public. Community members are encouraged to attend to pay tribute to the public safety personnel who willingly risk their lives every day in service to others.
