STICKY SITUATION

Lowell, Lake County-A semi hauling 40,000 pounds of honey lost control and rolled over on the ramp from west bound State Road 2 to I-65 south bound.

Preliminary investigation revealed at approximately 3:30 p.m., today, May 17, 2017, Trooper Kim Zelnis responded to a single vehicle crash, involving a 2013 Freightliner, owned by Lucky 5 Incorporated out of Lemont, Illinois, pulling a box trailer.  The semi was west bound on State Road 2 and made a left hand turn to go onto the south bound I-65 ramp.  The driver, Collies Lee Sharpes Junior, 57 from Lambert, Mississippi, took the turn too fast and lost control causing the tractor and trailer to roll over onto its passenger side on the outer shoulder of the ramp.

Sharpes was able to get out on his own and was not injured.  The crash damaged part of the trailer’s top and caused a small fuel leak from the tractor’s fuel tank.  The honey is loaded in seventeen plastic totes and they are being off loaded before the semi can be up righted.  Traffic is getting by on the ramp.

The Indiana State Police Commercial Vehicle Enforcement Division Inspector will be doing an inspection on the semi.

Assisting: Trooper Thomas Maymi, Lowell Fire and EMS and Area Towing.
