UPDATE #LASD Homicide Assist South Gate PD, Ofcr Involved Shooting Investigation, E. Artesia Bl/Cherry Av, Paramount
Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department Homicide Bureau detectives are continuing to assist South Gate Police Department with their investigation into the circumstances surrounding an Officer-Involved shooting.
On Monday, May 15, 2017, at 12:36 a.m., officers from the South Gate Police Department attempted to conduct a traffic stop on a stolen van. The driver of the van, a male Hispanic adult, refused to stop and led officers on a pursuit through city streets and the 710 freeway. During the pursuit the van slowed down long enough for one passenger, a male Hispanic 23 years old, to exit the van and surrender to officers. He was taken into custody without incident.
The driver drove off and the officers followed him to the rear of a Target department store. The driver exited the van along with a 27 year-old female Hispanic, and ran through a hole in a chain link fence and onto the railroad tracks. Officers chased after the suspects on foot. As they approached Artesia Boulevard, the driver reached into a black back pack he was carrying and put a glove on his hand. He then reached into the bag and pulled out a black object and pointed it at the officers. Believing the suspect had a gun one officer shot the suspect.
The suspect was hit by gunfire and collapsed. Paramedics responded and pronounced the suspect dead at the scene. The female suspect was located hiding in a nearby warehouse. She was taken into custody without incident.
A firearm was not located on the suspect.
The suspects were booked at South Gate Police Department for grand theft of a vehicle.
No officers were injured during the incident.
The investigation is ongoing and there are no additional information available at this time.
