Peace Officers Memorial Day / May 15, 2017

You will notice the American Flag located in the center of the Santa Rosa Campus has been placed at half-mast today in honor of Peace Officers Memorial Day. In 1962, President John F. Kennedy signed a proclamation which designated May 15 as Peace Officers Memorial Day and the week in which that date falls as Police Week. Currently, tens of thousands of law enforcement officers from around the world converge on Washington, DC to participate in a number of planned events which honor those that have paid the ultimate sacrifice. The Memorial Service began in 1982 as a gathering in Senate Park of approximately 120 survivors and supporters of law enforcement. Decades later, the event, more commonly known as National Police Week, has grown to a series of events which attracts thousands of survivors and law enforcement officers to our Nation's Capital each year.

Last year, 10 California peace officers made the ultimate sacrifice and were killed while serving the communities they were sworn to protect. On average, one law enforcement officer is killed in the line of duty somewhere in the United States every 63 hours. Over the last decade in the United States, an average of 151 officers a year have been killed in the line of duty. More than 20,000 United States’ local, State and Federal law enforcement officers have made the ultimate sacrifice.

Please join the Santa Rosa Junior College District Police Department and communities across America to pay recognition to those law enforcement officers who have lost their lives in the line of duty for the safety and protection of others.
