FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE FROM PLENARY WALSH KEYSTONE PARTNERS
May 8, 2017
Construction to Begin on PA 33 South Bridge in Bethlehem Township
Northampton County Bridge to be replaced as part of Public-Private Partnership
Allentown, PA – Construction for the PA 33 South bridge, spanning US 22 in Bethlehem Township, Northampton County, is scheduled to begin soon as part of the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation’s (PennDOT) Rapid Bridge Replacement Project. Replacement of this bridge will allow PennDOT to remove it from Northampton County’s structurally deficient bridge list.
Motorists should expect intermittent nighttime shoulder and lane closures for shoulder reconstruction on ramps Eastbound and Westbound 22 and Southbound 33 beginning Wednesday, May 10 to Friday May 12 from 8.30 a.m. to 5.30 a.m. There will also be intermittent nighttime shoulder and lane closures for shoulder reconstruction on ramps, EB/WB 22 and SB 33, expected to begin between May 14 and June 9.
Construction of the bridge is expected to begin on Sunday, June 11. During this time, traffic will be shifted on both US 22 and SR 33. Motorists are advised to slow down and be aware of new traffic patterns that will be in place. Nighttime detours for demolition and beam erection will take place during construction, with demolition scheduled to begin mid-June. Future restriction information will be released as the project progresses.
The project is scheduled to be completed in late December. Schedules are subject to change.
This bridge is referred to as JV-198 and is one out of the 558 bridges being replaced under the Rapid Bridge Replacement Project. JV references the joint-venture partnership between Walsh/Granite, which is leading construction for the entire project.
The Rapid Bridge Replacement Project is a public-private partnership (P3) between PennDOT and Plenary Walsh Keystone Partners (PWKP), under which PWKP will finance, design, replace, and maintain the bridges for 25 years. The P3 approach will allow PennDOT to replace the bridges more quickly while achieving significant savings and minimizing impact on motorists.
