Advisory

Diversion burglaries reported locally involving fake water company employees.

A few local police departments in Union County are investigating a few diversion burglaries involving fake water company employees.

During these incidents, an unknown Hispanic male approached the resident, who was in the driveway, and advised that he was a technician from the water company and there was a problem with the water service to the residence.

The unknown male communicated with another unknown male on a “walkie-talkie.” The homeowner escorted the male inside the residence, where after looking at the kitchen sink, he convinced the resident to take him to the basement for further inspection.
While in the basement, the homeowner heard footsteps upstairs and immediately went to check on it, however, there was no one in the house.

When the resident returned to the basement, the unknown male was no longer there.

This prompted the resident to check the rest of the home, discovering someone had gone through the second-floor bedrooms and that currency and checks had been taken.

Residents should use caution when they are approached by persons claiming to be utility workers requesting access to their residence. They should ask for proper identification and look for a utility vehicle with official markings.

**When in doubt do not let anyone have access to your home and immediately report the incident to the Rahway Police Department. at (732) 827-2200
