Advisory

Hazardous weather outlook for Clayton County. Click link for more details. Sheriff Victor Hill

*****Sent with the permission of Fire Chief/EMA Director Landry Merkison*****

Clayton County has been upgraded to a Slight Risk of Severe Thunderstorms,
and localized flooding is another impact possible with this system.

OVERVIEW: A cold front will be pushing across the state over the next 24 hours and with it, it will bring the potential for scattered strong & isolated severe storms. Have been seeing showers and isolated periods of lightning moving across north Georgia since midnight and coverage is expected to increase through the daytime hours Sunday.

WHAT: Scattered strong and isolated severe thunderstorms with the threat for damaging wind and large hail. Heavy rain (additional 1-2 inches with localized flooding possible) and frequent lightning will also accompany thunderstorm activity.

WHERE/WHEN: South and East of I-85 through this Evening.

Greatest risk will be across central Georgia this afternoon through the evening hours. An isolated strong to severe thunderstorm threat exists across north/central Georgia this morning into the early afternoon, but right now looks like cloud cover and widespread rain over the past several hours has inhibit instability. However, the locations with lack of cloud cover (seen across east-central GA) may be an area to watch for possible strong thunderstorm activity later this afternoon.

IMPACTS: Downed trees and power-lines from damaging winds, minor structure damage from any large hail, mainly across central Georgia. Could see some ponding of water on roadways or some rivers nearing bankfull, most so over north Georgia.

CONFIDENCE: High confidence on scattered strong storms and isolated severe across central Georgia. Medium-low confidence on severe potential across north Georgia.

Scattered showers will develop on the backside of this weather system late Sunday and continue through most of Monday. This activity will remain benign and will not be associated with any severe risk. Public safety should use caution when navigating to emergencies and be aware that trees are likely to fall due to ground saturation.
