PRESS RELEASE: Residential Structure Fire

NARRATIVE:
On April 16, 2017 at approximately 9am Ptl Joe Ammaturo was on routine patrol in the Borough of Interlaken. Ptl Ammaturo was dispatched to a residence on Grassmere Ave for a possible structure fire. Upon arrival Ptl Ammaturo was met by the homeowner who stated that there was an active fire in his basement. Ptl Ammaturo immediately retrieved a water can from his patrol vehicle and proceeded to the rear of the residence where the basement doors were located. He was confronted by heavy smoke coming from the basement stairs and decided to enter in an attempt to extinguish the flames.
Ptl Ammaturo successfully knocked down the bulk of the fire which was the result of a malfunctioning sump pump. Allenhurst and Wanamassa Fire Companies then arrived on scene a short time later and were able to finish extinguishing the flames and ventilate the home. Officers who responded were evaluated for smoke inhalations; however, they refused medical attention. No other injuries were reported.
