SUMMARY:
On Monday, April 10, 2017, at 9:59 a.m., a deputy observed a vehicle, teal Honda Civic, speeding Westbound on Main Street and initiated a traffic stop. When the deputy activated the marked patrol unit’s lights and sirens, the suspect pulled into the Rite Aid parking lot, at the intersection of Main Street and Eleventh Avenue as if he was going to yield. The suspect drove through the parking lot and onto Eleventh Avenue then fled north at a high rate of speed. As the suspect was approaching Willow Street, he went around another vehicle also traveling north, swerved into the southbound lane directly into the path of a Volkswagen Jetta traveling southbound, which resulted in a head-on collision with the Jetta. The suspect was pronounced deceased at the scene.
The driver and passenger of the Volkswagen were transported by air to local hospitals, and both remain hospitalized.
The Honda Civic driven by the suspect was confirmed to have been reported stolen on April 9th out of Victorville.
The pursuit lasted less than a minute before the suspect drove directly into the path of oncoming traffic and caused a head-on collision.
Deputies from the Hesperia Major Accident Investigation Team (MAIT) responded to the location and are conducting the investigation. At approximately 3:24 p.m., the roadways were re-opened.
