Approximately one week ago, Ms. Jogina Carrillo-Torres and members of “Team Doryan” were volunteering at a local children’s hospital when they were made aware of a young boy, Steven Pulido, and his desire to become a SWAT deputy.  Steven had told his parents when he grows up he wants to be a police officer and even more so a SWAT officer.  Unfortunately Shortly after he was born, Steven was diagnosed with Adrenoleukodystrophy (ALD) and childhood cerebral ALD, a rare genetic disorder characterized by the breakdown or loss of myelin – the fatty covering surrounding nerve cells in the brain – and progressive dysfunction of the adrenal gland.

After diagnosis, Steven began treatment to fight the disease, including two stem cell transplants, both of which ultimately failed, keeping him from fulfilling his dream of becoming a SWAT deputy.  With the help of “Team Doryan”, a nonprofit group whose goal is to assist and support families who have children undergoing a serious medical condition, deputies from the Sheriff’s Department’s Narcotics Bureau and the Special Enforcement Bureau were contacted.

Deputies from both bureaus jumped into action after learning about 6 year-old Steven Pulido’s wish to be a SWAT deputy.  They immediately began coordinating a day full of activities for Steven.
On Friday, April 7th, 2017, deputies from the Special Enforcement Bureau will assist Steven's parents in fulfilling his dream of becoming a SWAT officer for the day.  They hope to create lifelong memories with Steven, his sister Sophia Pulido who is 8 years-old and his parents.  Steven will receive a pair of SWAT fatigues, headgear, and equipment.  He will participate in rappel training with Sheriff’s Air Rescue 5 helicopter, a person down recue call with paramedics, and spend time with the Special Enforcement Bureau Special Weapons Team, and Aero Bureau deputies.

About Team Doryan
In 2007, Team Doryan was formed on behalf of Doryan Torres Carrillo, a vibrant and energetic little boy who courageously battled a rare form of brain cancer.  During the family’s ordeal, a need to assist and help guide other families going through the same situation grew stronger.  Even though Doryan’s family was experiencing new and challenging experiences, their need to support and help bring back a sense of normalcy to other families grew strong.

The core of Team Doryan is to help families who are facing one of life’s most difficult challenges: a serious medical diagnosis.  Some of the ways Team Doryan assists families is through raising much-needed awareness to benefit families; such is the example of the annual “Doryan Torres Carrillo Blood and Toy Drive” in partnership with members of the South Gate Police Department and sponsored by the Blood Donor Center at Children’s Hospital Los Angeles.  During the past few years, it has successfully raised much-need blood and blood products, which are used by the young patients hospitalized at CHLA.
