Stranger/Danger Safety Tips:
• Children should know their name, their parents name, their address, and phone number.
• Teach them never go anywhere or take anything from someone they don’t know.
• Know where your children are always. Make it a rule that your children must ask permission or check in with you before going anywhere. Give your children your work and cell phone number so they can reach you at all times.
• Let them know that they don’t have to be polite to a grown-up who is making them feel uncomfortable.
• Teach your children to pay attention to their inner voice, especially if you get an “uh-oh” feeling.
• Your children should stay more than an arm’s reach from strangers.
• In dangerous situations, children should say NO, RUN away, Yell as loud as they can, and TELL a trusted adult what happened right away (NO, GO, YELL, & TELL).
• Children should always use the buddy system; they should avoid walking anywhere alone.
• Teach them to go to a public place for help.
Warning Signs:
• Numerous or inappropriate questions.
• An adult asking them to disobey their parents or do something without permission.
• Asking them to keep a secret.
• Asking a child for help.
• Or anyone that makes them feel uncomfortable in any way.
Remember:
• Tell your children that if some stranger grabs them, they should do everything they can to stop him or her from pulling them away. Teach them to drop to the ground, kick, hit, bite, and scream. They should do whatever it takes to attract the attention of others who can help them. If someone drags them away, tell them to scream, “this is not my dad,” or “this is not my mom.”
