ISP Investigating Officer Involved Shooting

Jennings County-This morning, around 3:30 a.m., the Indiana State Police and Jennings County Sheriff’s Department responded to a domestic disturbance with shots fired at 5755 N. County Road 750 East, Butlerville, Indiana.  After the initial altercation where at least one shot was fired, a female left the residence and went to a nearby residence for assistance.

When officers arrived at the residence, the lone male occupant of the residence, Charles L. Mays, age 25, Butlerville, Indiana exited the residence and fired at the approaching officers.  Multiple officers with the Indiana State Police and Jennings County Sheriff’s Department returned fire.  Mays retreated back into the residence and refused to surrender to the officers.

Additional officers, including Indiana State Police Negotiators and the Indiana State Police Emergency Response Team responded to the residence.  Contact was made with Mays throughout the day although he remained barricaded until approximately 7:45 p.m. when he exited the residence and surrendered to the officers.

Mays was immediately given medical attention at the scene for injuries he sustained during the incident.  He was then transported to St. Vincent Jennings Hospital in North Vernon for further treatment of injuries which are believed to be non-life threatening.  Following treatment, Mays is expected to be transported to the Jennings County Jail where he will face preliminary charges of attempted murder, intimidation with a deadly weapon, criminal recklessness, and battery.

The names of the officers involved in the shooting will not be released at this time.

The Indiana State Police was assisted by the Jennings County Sheriff’s Department, Jennings County Prosecutor’s Office, Jennings County EMS, and the American Red Cross.

The investigation is ongoing.
