Timely Warning - Assault

Channing Way and Piedmont Avenue
BPD Case# 17-15251
 
A Campus Security Authority has reported to UCPD that on Sunday, March 19, 2017 at approximately mid-night an assault occurred.  The two male victims, a student and an unknown affiliation, were walking near the Channing Circle when they were confronted by a group of eight to ten males.  Without provocation three or four of the suspects began punching the two victims.  The victims were able to run away.  A short time later the victims encountered the suspects again and one of the suspects brandished a handgun.  The victims fled the scene and called BPD.  After the assault, one of the victims went to a local urgent care facility to be treated for minor injuries.
 
The suspects were described as:
8 to 10 African American males (no further description).

UCPD would like to remind the campus community about the following safety tips:
  • If harassed or assaulted, scream and attempt to run for safety.
  • Walk confidently, directly, and at a steady paced.  Don’t stop to talk to strangers.
  • Be alert for subjects loitering in an area with no particular purpose.
  • Watch where you are going and what is going on around you.
  • Never hitchhike.
  • If you need help via cell phone dial 510-642-3333 (UCPD) or 510-981-5911 (BPD) or use a Blue Light emergency phone (located throughout the campus and identified by a blue light on top of the phone box or column).
  • Please do not delay in calling 911.  UCPD strongly encourages the reporting of criminal or suspicious activity in a timely manner to assist us in intervening in potential criminal actively and apprehending suspects.
In this case a report was made to a Campus Security Authority who is required under the Federal Clery Act to report it to the campus Clery Compliance Officer.  UCPD is in turn required to alert our community of the crime.
